Literature Text

(Jesus finds himself at the pinnacle of the Temple of Jerusalem. Satan joins him again.)

Satan: There they are, Jesus, the people you have come to save. But first, they must have complete proof of who you are. To give them such proof, throw yourself down from this pinnacle. It is written that God's holy angels are ever mindful of you, and will save you from so much as striking your foot against a stone. They will save you before you receive even a scratch, and it will serve as a sign and a wonder to the people. Your fame will spread throughout Judea like wildfire, and all will come to believe that you are truly the Son of God.

Jesus: You say it is written that my life will be spared.

Satan: It is, and it will be.

Jesus: It is also written that we must never tempt the Lord God. It is faith that precedes the miracles. The miracles are not to precede the faith.
It's amazing how Satan never quits, even when he knows he will lose in the end. While it's true that falling from the dizzying heights of the temple and landing in the courtyard unharmed would have been a most impressive feat, and would have undoubtedly won the interest and admiration of thousands, it's like Jesus says: faith precedes the miracle, not the other way around.

That's strike two.

So the lesson is try not to risk your life to have a miracle be performed. That's a pretty good moral to teach people.
